This is not an anthology of folklore and tales, but, rather, a study of the types of lore and legends that thrived in the oral traditions of the Scottish Highlands. Celtic scholar Anne Ross explores the roles played by clans, communal labor, seasonal festivities and historical migrations in fostering the rich traditions of Scotland. Sections touch on omens, taboos, witchcraft, rituals associated with birth and death, the supernatural and second sight. Those interested in Pictish iconography will enjoy this volume.
Ross refers to numerous accounts and writings from the 18th century, as well as songs and accounts drawn from previous generations of folklorists and historians. This is a somewhat academic classic that was first published over 25 years. 158 page paperback.
